The three membership tiers explained, and how to pick one without overpaying for space you would not use.
Almost every coworking space sells the same three tiers under slightly different names. The difference between them is simple once stated plainly: how much space is reserved exclusively for you. That single variable drives the price, the flexibility, and the privacy.
Hot desk (open-plan membership)
You get access to the shared workspace and sit wherever is free. Nothing is reserved; you pack up at the end of the day.
Includes: shared workspace access, secured internet, café and lounge, phone booths, a business address, and usually a monthly meeting-room credit. Typically 24/7 building access.
Suits: people in two to four days a week, remote employees splitting time with home, consultants who are often at client sites, and anyone whose week varies.
The trade-off: nothing stays. No second monitor, no leaving files, no guaranteed favourite seat. On the busiest mornings the best spots go early. If your setup matters to you, this will grate.
Dedicated desk
Your own desk in the shared area, reserved permanently. Same room as the hot deskers, but that desk is yours and nobody else uses it.
Adds: a permanent workstation you can leave set up — monitor, keyboard, chair adjusted how you like it — often with lockable storage. Usually a larger meeting-room allowance.
Suits: people in four or more days a week, anyone whose work needs dual monitors, and people who value walking in and starting immediately rather than setting up.
The trade-off: more than open-plan, because the operator can only sell that square footage once. You're still in shared space, so it solves the setup problem but not the privacy one.
Private office
A furnished, lockable room for you or your team, inside the workspace, with full access to every shared amenity.
Adds: a door that closes and locks, acoustic privacy for calls, secure storage for physical files, and a space you can arrange as your own. Team offices are priced per office rather than per person.
Suits: anyone handling confidential material, people on calls most of the day, teams of two or more, and anyone who needs to host clients in their own space.
The trade-off: the highest tier. You also lose some of the incidental contact that draws people to coworking in the first place — a real consideration if community is part of why you're here.

Choosing without overpaying
Four questions settle it:
- How many days a week will you actually be there? Be honest, not aspirational. Fewer than four, start with open-plan.
- Do you need a second monitor? If yes, you want a dedicated desk. Carrying and reconnecting a screen daily is not sustainable.
- Is your work confidential? Regulated professions, client financials, legal or medical material, HR conversations — that's a private office, and the other tiers aren't really options.
- How much of your day is calls? Occasional calls are fine from a phone booth. Calls most of the day means a private office.
If you're between two tiers, start lower. Moving up mid-term is straightforward almost everywhere. Moving down often isn't, because the operator has already committed your space.
The most common mistake
People routinely buy a tier above what they need, usually reasoning that they'll grow into it. Then they use the space three days a week and pay for a reserved desk sitting empty the other two.
The opposite error is rarer but more annoying day to day: choosing open-plan when you genuinely need privacy, then spending your working life hunting for a free phone booth between calls.
Match the tier to how you actually work now. You can change it later — that's the entire point of flexible workspace.
